Bonus Planned for Digital Medical Records

Bonus Planned for Digital Medical Records
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: December 31, 2009
Medicare officials on Wednesday detailed plans to distribute billions of dollars in stimulus to upgrade the nation’s paper medical records to electronic files.
Reading the linked article got me thinking about just how unruly the Digital Medical Records landscape is. When it comes to digital medical records the first thing that comes to my mind is the “wild west” of the 1800’s. Wide open frontiers with little or no regulation at first. People making choices that were more often than not based purely on instinct. The decisions faced by these pioneers were many. Where do I live, how will I make a living, is this move best for me and my future? These are only a few of the questions that many asked themselves as they pushed west into the new frontier. Some people made the right choices and they, along with future generations, thrived and prospered. Unfortunately, others made decisions that left them alone and isolated. I can only imagine the large number of towns and settlements that quickly became ghost towns.

Okay, now you are asking yourself “where is Marc going with this spotty history analogy”. Simple, as pioneers in digitizing medical records how will you make the right choice that won’t leave you standing in a “ghost town” a few years from now? Simply stated, stick to standards! Do not buy anything that locks you into proprietary record formats. Do not lock yourself into long term, or even worse, evergreen contracts. Do ask questions. Do seek advice. This is where Data Reduction Systems (DRS) can help. We offer our prospects free document management consultation services to help them select the right EMR system. Now you might ask yourself, what’s in it for DRS? DRS will assist you with the migration of all of your existing patient files into your new system. This task is simple for a company that has been in the document management business for 25 years!

So pick up the phone, call me, let me be your guide to navigate the “wild west” safely.

Thanks for reading.
